The purpose of the Calgary Combative Sports Commission is to regulate, govern and control professional combative sporting events and contestants within the City of Calgary. The Calgary Combative Sports Commission will publish rules governing the conduct of these events.

The Commission is authorized to control and regulate all aspects of combative sports events held in the City, including the authority to:

  • make recommendations to the Chief Licence Inspector regarding the licencing of combative sports events, including recommendations regarding conditions on an event licence or promoter licence;
  • retain sufficient officials required to oversee an event and impose the cost of those officials on the promoter of the event;
  • establish policies governing the conduct of promoters, officials, contestants and other persons participating in or attending events;
  • establish policies and procedures governing contests;
  • establish policies governing the credentials, qualifications and selection processes for officials; and
  • establish policies for internal Commission procedures.

Board Information

Term Length:

  • a member's first term is 1 year
  • subsequent terms are 3 years

Term Limit:

  • a member may be reappointed up to a total of five terms (maximum of 13 years)
  • Council may reappoint a Commission member for additional terms that would take that member past five terms of service if the resolution is passed by at least two thirds majority vote of Council

5 voting members appointed by resolution of Council

1 non-voting member being the Chief License Inspector, or designate

The Commission shall meet at the call of the Chair and not less than five (5) times per year.

Remote / Hybrid meeting: Mix of in-person and remote meetings.

Must be:

  • Resident of Calgary
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Indigenous persons who may reside outside of Calgary but are residents of the Calgary surrounding area within the Treaty 7 region, including those Indigenous persons who belong to the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, Amskaapipiikani and Kainai First Nations; the Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and those persons who are Métis, including citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government residing in Foothills Métis District 1, Medicine Hat Métis District 2, Red Deer Métis District 3, Rocky View Métis District 4, Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6.

Ineligible to apply:

  • a promoter, or a promoter within one year prior to application to become a member,
  • a contestant, or a contestant within one year prior to application to become a member,
  • an agent of a licensee, or an agent of a licensee within one year prior to application to become a member,
  • a member of the Licence and Community Standards Appeal Board of The City of Calgary, or
  • an immediate relative of any person who is not eligible pursuant to this Section.

No more than two City employees may be voting members of the Commission at any one time.

Each member must sign a certificate acknowledging his or her eligibility and agreement to abide by all policies, procedures and any code of conduct established by the Commission.

TIME REQUIREMENT
For Members:
     o    2-5 hours/week (15+ hours on the week of a combative sports event)
For the Chair:
     o    10-20 hours/week (30-50 hours on the week of a combative sports event)

This is a Governance Board, Not an Athletic Board. Members are called Commissioners.
