The Calgary Police Commission is a statutory body created under the Alberta Police Act. The Calgary Police Commission has the following legislated responsibilities:

 - to allocate funds provided by City Council, done in consultation with the Chief of Police;

 - to establish policies providing for efficient and effective policing;

 - to issue instructions as necessary to the Chief in regards to those policies; and

 - to ensure sufficient persons are employed by the Service to carry out the functions of the Service.

The Calgary Police Commission is responsible for appointing the Chief of Police and evaluating his or her performance. The Police Commission issues directions to the Calgary Police Service through the Chief of Police. The Chief is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Police Service.

Additionally, the Calgary Police Commission monitors the public complaints process; handles complaints regarding the Chief of Police; and handles appeals regarding the policies of, or services provided by, the Calgary Police Service.

The Calgary Police Commission is accountable to the Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security and operates in accordance with the Calgary Police Commission bylaw, set by the City of Calgary.

Board Information

Council must appoint Members for a two year term, effective on November 1 of the year of the Organizational Meeting at which the appointment is made and expiring on the second October 31 thereafter or when a successor is appointed, whichever is later.

A Member of a the Police Commission is eligible for reappointment if the reappointment does not result in more than 10 consecutive years of service by that member. (Police Act RSA 2010, Ch. 21)

Any vacancies shall be filled for the balance of that term within 60 days from the date Council is notified that the vacancy has occurred to ensure continuity.

Up to 9 Members appointed by Council, two Members of which shall be Councillors or City employees.

Meeting 8 times a year, on the last Wednesday of the month

Meetings are hybrid (Zoom and in person), start time is 3 pm

Internal – Oversight/Regulatory

Public members must be residents of Calgary and be at least 18 years of age

Ineligible to apply: Current and former employees of the Calgary Police Service, including both sworn and civilian employees

Members are subject to an Enhanced Security Check by Calgary Police Service and are required to swear an oath

     o    30 hours per month
For the Chair:
     o    90 hours per month

Each Commissioner contributes a minimum of 30 hours each month to meeting attendance, preparation, learning opportunities, and public events.
