The goal of the Council Advisory Committee on Housing is to support Council's goal to increase equitable outcomes for Calgarians seeking safe, affordable, and supportive housing.

The Committee will provide Council with:
(a) advice and recommendations on previously approved Council initiatives which address the housing crisis;
(b) independent monitoring and feedback on The City’s progress towards addressing housing affordability;
(c) support for collaboration and advocacy between City administration, Council, other orders of government and professionals within the housing sector and Calgarians.

Board Information

TERM: 

- 2 years

- Council may appoint some members for 1-year terms in order to stagger term expiry.

 

The Committee shall consist of:

 - a minimum of 9 public members and a maximum of 15 public members.

 - 1 member of City Administration - the Chief Housing Officer or a delegate.

 

Membership should include public members from:

- housing developers, including land and building development;

- real estate industry and/or market rental housing operators;

- non-market housing developers and operators;

- homeless-serving agencies, second stage shelters and transitional housing operators;

- Indigenous people living in Calgary;

- Calgarians with lived experience related to homelessness, housing precarity, and non-market tenancies;

- Calgarians with knowledge of or lived experience related to housing for seniors, post-secondary students, and families with children;

- Calgarians with knowledge of or lived experience related to universal access design standards and housing for equity deserving communities including newcomers;

- economists and/or academic professionals with housing related experience.

The overall membership composition must reflect a range of housing subject areas to ensure broad expertise and representation. Diversity, equity, and inclusivity must be considered when selecting members.

Greater than 50% of all members.

Internal – Advisory

Public members must be Calgary residents

At least 18 years of age 

Indigenous persons who may reside outside of Calgary but are residents of the Calgary surrounding area within the Treaty 7 region, including those Indigenous persons who belong to the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, Amskaapipiikani and Kainai First Nations; the Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and those persons who are Métis, including citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government residing in Foothills Métis District 1, Medicine Hat Métis District 2, Red Deer Métis District 3, Rocky View Métis District 4, Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6.

Diversity, equity, and inclusivity must be considered when selecting members.

Pamela Reid

The Committee will report to Council through the Community Development Committee and will provide an annual progress report. Additional reporting may occur as matters arise.

Members will be recruited during the City Clerk's Office Annual Recruitment Campaign, and will be appointed at the 2024 October 22 Organizational Meeting of Council.
