The Calgary Planning Commission's responsibilities include:

1. To advise and assist Council and co-ordinate the activities of various Departments & agencies of The City with regard to the planning of orderly and economical development and maintaining and improving the quality of the physical environment for human settlement within the City, including but not limited to the following:
     i) review and approval of Outline Plans;
     ii) review and approval of Tentative Plans not within the scope of section 5(a) (Bylaw 28P95);
     iii) advising Council on land use matters;
     iv) review and make recommendations on municipal projects referred to it; and
     v) review and approval of development permit applications as a Development Authority pursuant to The Development Authority Bylaw;
     i) any other planning matter referred to it.

2. To perform those administrative functions as delegated to it by Council pursuant to the Municipal Government Act; and

3. To perform on behalf of Council such functions as Council may require.

Two meetings per month, on Thursdays.

Internal – Oversight/Regulatory

Of the six public member positions on the Calgary Planning Commission, at least two positions are filled from amongst citizens-at-large who apply through a public recruitment campaign. Up to four of the six public member positions on the Commission may be filled either from the public recruitment campaign or from non-binding nominees solicited from professional organizations.  The Calgary Planning Commission strives to ensure its collective membership includes expertise in:
     • Architecture
     • Engineering
     • Home Building
     • Landscape Architecture
     • Real Estate Development
     • Real Estate and/or Planning Law
     • Urban Design
     • Urban Planning
or other areas of expertise Council deems appropriate.

By resolution of Council (Report C2004-37), non-binding nominations have been solicited from the following organizations, with no obligation to appoint any of the public member positions from within these groups:
     • Alberta Association of Architects
     • Alberta Association of Landscape Architects
     • Alberta Professional Planners Institute
     • Association Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta
     • BILD Calgary Region
     • Canadian Bar Association
     • Federation of Calgary Communities

Official CPC meeting commences at 1:00 PM and runs on average for four hours. Meeting length is subject to the agenda size and complexity. 

Prior to the official meeting, a pre-meeting is held at 12:15 PM – 12:50 PM to discuss administrative business. Attendance at both, meetings is expected. Members must be available to attend CPC meetings during or after regular business hours as some meetings may run into the evening. 

The CPC Agenda package will be available six days in advance of the CPC meeting for review. For an average meeting length, members should expect to spend approximately three hours reading and reviewing reports in advance of CPC meetings.
